It is necessary to bring warmth and a love of the language and culture into the classroom or virtual classroom. Remember that a language does not stand-alone by itself - it is connected profoundly to the culture of a country. Of course, with Spanish I believe it is important, if possible, to identify in which country the student wishes to use the language. For example, if the student is in Mexico or is planning on living in Mexico, then the student should be exposed to Mexican popular music (or whatever is his or her favorite genre of music), Mexican soap operas, movies, food, and so forth. You never know what will be the “door” that will capture the imagination of your student and give him or her the added incentive to study and practice more thoroughly. In my case, my professor and I wrote poetry and lyrics to songs. But most importantly, the most essential quality is a constant gentle pressure to learn the language. A student needs to feel that it is important to learn the language. Beware of the student who uses translation software to do his or her homework. Always push the student, just a bit, to complete his or her homework. Do not overdo it; just make sure the student is doing his or her part. Too many teachers are too nice, or on the hand, too strict.
